Mercedes-Benz unveils the 2018 A-Class with what3words voice navigation

02/02/2018

Mercedes-Benz is the first car manufacturer to integrate what3words and make it available to customers through its innovative new voice-controlled infotainment system, MBUX. 2018 A-Class drivers will be able to enter precise destinations using 3 word addresses, by voice or text input.

Daimler CEO, Dieter Zetsche launched the new A-Class at the Mercedes-Benz Cars press conference:

Press coverage of the launch included Fortune, Autoblog and CNet.

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz A-Class features advanced voice control technology that enables users to speak in ‘natural language’ to adjust car settings and control the infotainment. The system can be awoken with ‘Hey Mercedes’, and will be more advanced than any previous system. It comes along with a raft of new features that are integrated into an all-new interior, with new, ultra-advanced satellite navigation technology, in a thoroughly re-engineered hatchback.

‘With Mercedes-Benz User Experience, we have moved one big step closer to our goal of making the vehicle into a mobile assistant. 3 word addresses are very simple to use, meaning drivers can give their car any precise destination, and know they’re navigating to the correct location, every time.”
–   Sajjad Khan, vice president of Digital Vehicle and Mobility, Daimler AG.

what3words is the first addressing system specifically designed for voice input, eliminating many of the frustrations encountered by drivers using voice to enter traditional street addresses. 3 word addresses are more reliable than street addresses or postcodes, allowing drivers to navigate with precision to a specific building entrance or car park, bypassing sat nav inaccuracies. They also cover the entire world, and can be used to drive to parks, beaches and pop-up markets so drivers can enjoy the range of urban and rural spaces that don’t have street addresses at all.

The new A-Class will be presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March and will be on sale in the UK by mid-2018.
