Innovative location technology
what3words
is now live in the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, giving drivers in India a simple, voice-enabled way to navigate to precise locations using just three words. The what3words in-car app is available via the app store in the car’s in-vehicle infotainment system (IVI), with a growing fleet of Maruti Suzuki models, including the new Brezza, set to gain access to the app by the end of this year.
In a vast and diverse country like India, addressing can be complex and varied across different regions. Street names are often duplicated, pin codes can cover broad areas, and many locations are described using informal landmarks or local knowledge. Remote locations, industrial sites and roadside spots also frequently lack a street address altogether. These inconsistencies make accurate destination entry difficult, and can be particularly challenging for voice-led navigation systems – causing frustration and inefficiencies for drivers.
what3words provides an easy-to-use solution, designed with voice in mind. The system has divided the world into a grid of 3m x 3m squares, and assigned each square a unique combination of three dictionary words – known as a what3words address. As a result, every apartment building entrance, parking space, warehouse drop-off point and starting point of a remote hiking trail has its own what3words address. For example, ///century.responses.fits pinpoints the precise entrance to Maruti Suzuki India’s headquarters in New Delhi. The app is available in over 60 languages to date, including 13 South Asian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil and more.
Offering the signature level of accuracy and reliability of the what3words mobile experience, the new in-car app brings precise location input to many more drivers across India. Enabled by custom-trained AI, users are able to search for and enter a what3words address for their destination using natural language voice commands. For example, a driver can say “Let’s navigate to scowls flattery energy” , select the destination and be guided to the precise location with ease.
Drivers can even access what3words locations saved in existing lists on the app and retrieve them using conversational voice AI. For example: “Find the newest saved location from my trekking list and let’s navigate there.” The app is available as part of the what3words Pro membership.
Thousands of new Victoris cars enabled with the IVI are already on the road in India, with the number set to rise significantly by the end of 2026, as more Maruti Suzuki models roll out the technology. This means prospective buyers booking a test drive, or people already behind the wheel will find what3words ready to use by simply linking their what3words Pro account.
Chris Sheldrick, Co-founder and CEO of what3words said: “India has been an important market for what3words for years, and bringing our technology to Maruti Suzuki vehicles marks a major highlight in our journey here. With the what3words in-car app, drivers in India will be able to quickly and intuitively input precise destinations using their voice and in their chosen language – making everyday journeys that little bit easier.”
what3words’ expanded solutions for cars builds on the company’s growing momentum in the automotive sector, with the technology already natively embedded into vehicles from brands including Mahindra, Jaguar Land Rover and Subaru, and available via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Google Built-In.
