Three words to tell US public safety teams exactly where you are
Help US public safety teams find you faster by learning to share your what3words address.
How to share a what3words address in an emergency
- Open the free what3words app
- Tap the Locate Me icon
- The what3words address for your current location will be displayed at the top of the screen.
- Read out the three words to your emergency call taker.
For example, if you were lost in Griffith Park and the what3words app displayed the words ///scores.eagle.comb – you could call 911 and simply say: ‘My what3words address is scores eagle comb’. The call taker will use the what3words address to see exactly where you are and send help. The what3words app works offline – ideal for areas with unreliable data connection.
Remember: always gather as much location information as you can in an emergency in case what3words addresses aren’t accepted.
What is what3words?
what3words has divided the globe into 10 ft squares and given each one a unique three word identifier. It means any precise location can be communicated with just three words.
For example, ///narrate.optical.carry will take you to Arizona’s Horseshoe Bend overlook of the Colorado River.
As well as the free app for iOS and Android , what3words is available online at what3words.com
Which services in my state use what3words?
The following US public safety teams have confirmed they accept and use what3words. This is not a comprehensive list, as what3words is also available to over 4,800 Emergency Communications Centers across the US via RapidSOS, CAD vendors and other tools.
If your local force isn’t on this list, you can reach out to ask them if they’ve heard of what3words or contact us directly.
